The Four Enemies of Cannabis

  1. Heat — accelerates cannabinoid degradation (THC converts to CBN)
  2. Light — UV destroys cannabinoids faster than any other factor
  3. Air (oxygen) — oxidizes THC and evaporates terpenes
  4. Humidity — too dry and flower becomes harsh and loses terps; too wet and it molds

The Gold Standard: Sealed Glass + Humidity Pack + Dark + Cool

Container

Glass mason jars are the standard. Small jars for current stash (less air), larger jars for long-term storage. Avoid plastic baggies (static attracts trichomes off the bud, off-gasses), metal containers (affects flavor), and decorative jars with rubber gaskets that don't seal tight.

UV-tinted glass (amber or dark violet) is better than clear. If you only have clear jars, store them in a drawer or cupboard.

Humidity Packs

Boveda 62% is the standard for flower. These small pouches absorb or release moisture to maintain a constant relative humidity inside the jar. One 8g pack per ounce of flower. Replace every 2–4 months, or when the pack gets hard.

Flower stored at 62% RH stays pliable, aromatic, and smokes smooth. At 50% RH, flower gets brittle and harsh. At 70%+, mold risk becomes real.

Temperature

Target: below 70°F (21°C). Room temperature is fine; a cupboard away from direct sunlight is ideal. Do not refrigerate flower (humidity cycles during door opening destroy trichomes). Do not freeze unless you're planning to make hash — freezing makes trichomes brittle and they fall off when handled.

Location

Dark. Cool. Stable. A bedroom closet on an interior wall beats a garage or kitchen cabinet near the stove.

How Long Will Properly-Stored Flower Last?

Concentrates Storage

Live resin, rosin, and other concentrates degrade faster than flower. Store in silicone containers or parchment-lined glass, in a cool dark place. For batches you're not using within a month, the refrigerator (in an airtight secondary container to prevent condensation) is acceptable.

Edibles Storage

Follow the "use by" date on the package. Gummies should be airtight at room temp; chocolates in a cool spot away from heat. Never freeze gummies — texture ruined.

Vape Carts

Upright, cap on, mouthpiece down is fine. Avoid hot cars (the thinner oil can leak past the coil). Below 80°F is the comfort zone.

Signs Your Weed Has Gone Bad

🚫 When in doubt, throw it out. Mold on cannabis is a real health risk — especially for immunocompromised people. No cost savings is worth a lung infection.
